Korean Fair Trade Commission forces new consumer policies on App Store and Google Play

Tweaking refunds and automatic billing

Korean Fair Trade Commission forces new consumer policies on App Store and Google Play

Demonstrating the power of government legislation, both Google and Apple have been forced to change the way their app stores operate in South Korea.

The switch brings the stores in line with legislation that the Korean Fair Trade Commission applied to domestic websites, including those from KT, SK Planet, LG Electronics and LG Uplus earlier in 2014.

Forced consumer friendly

The move will stop Android apps automatically charging customers at the end of a trial period, as well as improving the flexibility of refunds from both stores.

According to Hwang Won-chul, head of the KFTC's Adhesion Contract Division, Apple is considering applying the new Korean terms globally, while Google will limit the changes to the Korean Google Play store only.
