• 5 King takes another stab at midcore RPGs with soft-launched Legend of Solgard

  

  King is at it again with attempts to break into the midcore market with the newly soft-launched RPG Legend of Solgard.

  The game combines elements of match-3 puzzle games with turn-based RPG mechanics – blending what it’s good at with a market it’s spent years trying to break.

  Previous attempts at midcore include Rise of Tyrants and Hero, both of which have been canned.

  It’s released the likes of The Walking Dead: Road to Survival, Yahtzee With Buddies and WWE Champions, all proving to be lucrative releases.

  So it’s no surprise the company is able to appease investors and keep the funds rolling in, most recently to the tune of $60 million.

• 3 Wargaming opens mobile division to develop and publish mobile games

  Wargaming has made forays into the mobile space before, and now it’s at it again with Wargaming Mobile.

  The new development and publishing division will be headquartered in Cyprus and is headed up by former Gree and Kabam exec Keith Kawahata.

  “Wargaming Mobile brings more than just the Wargaming company’s stellar lineup of proven PC titles ready for adaptation to smartphones and tablets, as has already been done with World of Tanks Blitz,” said Kawahata.

  “We also offer the Wargaming Mobile Publishing Program, a comprehensive publishing solution for smaller developers to use as a springboard to instant market presence and consumer awareness.”

  When Supercell releases a new game, it’s a big deal in the mobile games industry.

  The Finnish developer doesn’t decide to even soft-launch a game lightly, let alone a full release. So news that it had soft-launched an eSports-focused PvP game in Brawl Stars was certainly the talk of the town.

  We asked our Mobile Mavens what their thoughts are on it and whether they think it will get a global release.

  And their opinions on the game are mixed, believing improvements need to be made if it's to meet Supercell's high bar for success.

  The experts have already had their say on Brawl Stars, and while it has many great qualities, some have questioned whether it will be Supercell’s high standards for a global launch.

  So in jumped our very own Jon Jordan to discuss why he hopes the experts are wrong and that the Finnish developer will give the game the full release it deserves.

  “Brawl Stars is the best example to-date of Supercell’s skill at condensing the essence of complex elements such as gameplay, metagame, social reinforcement, monetisation, and sheer fun into a simple package that appeals to the widest audience,” wrote Jordan.

  “Maybe that’s why I like it so much; at heart, I am a simple man.”
