Future trends from the remembrance of things past

2014 in Review: Patrick Kelly, Outplay

As 2014 begins to fade into memory, we're taking a look back at the events that have dominated the last 12 months in mobile gaming.

As such, we've asked the industry's great and good to give us their take on the year, as well as predicting the trends that will dominate in 2015.

Patrick Kelly is head of marketing at Scottish developer Outplay Entertainment, which recently announced its mobile games portfolio had surpassed 20 million downloads.

Pocket Gamer: What was the most significant news in 2014?

Patrick Kelly: Massive continued growth.

Analyst estimates place 2014 mobile game revenue at $21 billion and there are no signs of growth slowing down.

How did your business focus change in 2014?

2014 was a year of new launches at Outplay, in addition to growing existing titles.

Achieving App Store Editors' Choice for Monster Legacy was a significant event, slightly above Bubble Blaze blowing past the 10 million download milestone.

We've had a big year of growth.

What was your favourite mobile game of the year?

Alien Creeps TD (from Outplay) because I choose to play it most over any other game.

Flow was a favourite earlier in the year for simple time-filling challenges.

What do you predict will be the most important markets for your games in 2015?

US and other English-speaking tier one countries will remain important, but China, Brazil and Russia will be interesting.

What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2015?

Online multiplayer is being tipped as an interesting area for development.

Wearables will become a thing but it's not clear whether games will find a home there, at least not to begin with.

What's your New Year's resolution and what resolution would you enforce on the industry?

Overall for the industry, I would hope we can set a standard of terms that everyone understands and agrees upon.

Thanks to Patrick for his time.
