Gumi chooses Berlin for its new European-focused mobile game development team

Ambitious Japanese developer Gumi (TYO:3903) already has European offices in Stockholm and Paris but it's now gearing up for something more substantial.

It's just announced it's establishing a European HQ in Berlin.

The office will include functions such as localisation, UA, community management and back office tasks, but more significantly will also include Gumi's first European game development team.

Its purpose will be to develop F2P mobile games for the European audience that take advantage of Gumi's experience in the lucrative Japanese market.

Hiring now

The studio's establishment will be headed up Gumi VP Are Mack Growen.

"Our IPO in December put us in the fortunate position of being able to think long term as we start to build our presence in Berlin for the Western markets," he stated.

"This is critical as user expectations, development budgets and acquisition costs continue to rise.

"We aim to become as successful here as gumi has been in the Asian markets, and we now have the funding that it requires."

In addition, Mirko Hering, who has previously worked at developers such as Travian and Koch Media, has joined as director of production for Europe.
