Mobile Games University: Guide to Game Analytics 101

Course Area: Design

Level: Introductory, Intermediate

Course Convenors: Oscar Clark

So what is analytics?

Analytics is tracking data that can tell you how players are interacting with your game, what levels they are playing, where they are getting stuff, what they are buying and when, and so on. Analytics can also tell you how many players you have and how many are playing at any given moment.

Why is it important?

When used properly, analytics can offer incredibly useful insights into player behaviour and may help you identify design flaws and successes. Through analytics, developers can hone the game experience to keep players engaged and retain them for longer.

It’s not the be all and end all, you may still need to manage the community feedback, and sometimes design decisions are down to just that, design. But the right data can help developers make informed decisions about their game, improve chances of success and ultimately, make it more fun to play.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone looking to improve their understanding of analytics, how to identify the right data to track and use, and how this information can then be used for game design.

These resources are ideal for beginners getting to grips with harnessing data, though there’s also some useful advice for those who have some experience with analytics, too.
