Job well done, or gone too soon?

Dell mobile head Garriques to leave as smartphone assault ramps up
More than three years after he came on board to lift the firm's smartphone operations, head of Dell's mobile communications group Ron Garriques is to leave the firm in the new year.

Garriques, who previously headed up Motorola's mobile unit, oversaw the launch of Dell's first smartphones – the Android powered Dell Mini 3 in China and the Aero in the US (pictured).

He also took charge of Dell's first steps into the tablet market, with the 5 inch Streak acting as a precursor for the launch of larger devices in the future.

From head to helper

However, Garriques will leave his post on January 28 2011, with Dell spokesman David Frink claiming the mobile group is to be assimilated into Dell's main operations following his departure.

"He made a decision to look at other opportunities as we integrate the former communications solutions group into our core operating structure," Frink said in a statement.

Though leaving the firm, Garriques will still act as a consultant for Dell through to the end of 2011.
