There's currently something of a philosophical debate rumbling on with some companies predicting an app-based future, while others talk up the power of HTML5.

Of course, it's not an either or experience, but social mobile portable MocoSpace is successfully proving that HTML5 works for its audience with the second release of an HTML5 game for mobile browsers on its MocoSpace Games Platform.

Launched in December 2010, Stage Hero already has over 350,000 monthly average users (MAUs), while average session times are over 4 minutes, with players averaging nearly 2.5 sessions per day.

Double whammy

This popularity builds on the base of the company's first mobile social game Street Wars, which launched in October 2010 and currently has over 370,000 MAUs.

In total, MocoSpace has 16 million registered users; an audience it hopes to be converting into mobile gamers as it releases additional games throughout 2011.

"The revenue and popularity of our games business has exceeded our initial expectations, compelling us to scale our title catalog for 2011 and double the number of titles we plan to launch," states MocoSpace CEO Justin Siegel.

"We've seen a strong demand from members and new users, as people are finding that games are a fun way to meet people and have fun on their phone."
