Skulls of the Shogun, The Room 2, and Fiz are heading the Quality Index's Top 10 rated iOS and Android games of December 2013

If you were wondering what the best-reviewed iOS and 'droid games on the web last month were, here are the iPhone Quality Index, iPad Quality Index, and Android Quality Indexround-ups for December to fill you in.

The iPhone, iPad, and Android Quality Indexes boast over 650,000 reviews (in total) from websites like 148Apps, Pocket Gamer, and Gamezebo, and use a unique metric to create a single definitive score for each iOS and Android title.

Better late than never

iPhone owners aren't used to belated conversions.

But when they're of the quality of Skulls of the Shogun - which debuted on Windows Phone almost a year ago - we doubt they'll mind.

Yep, 17-Bit's witty strategy game has sliced its way to the top of December's iPhone Qi game chart.

17-Bit had to beat off strong competition from Rockstar and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which is one of the biggest games in the massively popular open-world crime sim series.

As it is, Rockstar's parody of West Coast America sits comfortably at #3.

Finally, Om Nom returns in Cut the Rope 2. In this long-awaited full sequel to the ZeptoLab classic, there are all-new mechanics and more physic-based conundrums.

We've been waiting for The Room 2 all year... and it hasn't disappointed.

Fireproof Games's exquisite locked-box puzzler sequel justifiably tops the December iPad Qi game chart.

While we're not on the subject of gritty adult-only games, Telltale's The Wolf Among Us prowls menacingly in seventh place.

The team behind Walking Dead: The Game has crafted a fine fantasy-themed mystery noir here.

Fiz: Brewery Management Game forms a rich head atop December's potent Android Qi game chart brew.

Bit By Bit's charming casual business-management game had the critics feeling all giddy and light-headed last month. Hic!

December was a good month for Tin Man Games, too, which has two representatives in the gaming chart.

Island of the Lizard King sits at #2 with its distinctive Fighting Fantasy gamebook style.

Tin Man Games's second game on this month's leaderboard is Gary Chalk's Gun Dogs. It's another interactive gamebook, but this time with artwork provided by Lone Wolf illustrator Gary Chalk.

Down in eighth place, meanwhile, Savant - Ascent is an oddball arcade game with 2D shmup action, a 16-bit Castlevania aesthetic, and a pounding dubstep soundtrack from Norwegian electronic artist Savant.

N.B. While we only display the average score to one decimal place, the lists are generated to further significant figures. We just don't show them all.

And, naturally, these are static graphs based on live listings which are subject to constant change as new releases and reviews emerge.

In order to provide a regular marker of the critical zeitgeist, however, we will continue to round up the best of the iOS and Android games released each month to provide the definitive Quality Index top tens.
