Indian devs on the potential and risks of developing for branded IPs

As part of the Make in India track at Pocket Gamer Connects Bangalore 2015, a panel of Indian developers talked about developing games for existing, big name IPs.

Siddhartha Roy, COO of Consumer Business & Allied Services at Hungama Digital, was joined by Rohith Bhat, MD & CEO at Robosoft Technologies; Amit Khanduja, EVP Global of Reliance Entertainment – Digital; and Chirag Desai, Associate Director of Digital Media at Viacom 18.

A name will only get you so far

Khanduja warned that while a big IP will drive interest, the game itself needs to be high quality too, otherwise "you can get those downloads, but you'll never have the sustainability."

As an example, he talked about Real Steel, which, while the movie wasn't considered a huge success, the game based on the IP still has an audience who are continuing to buy IAPs.
