At Pocket Gamer Connects San Francisco 2015, Bill Magnuson, co-founder and CTO of Appboy, gave a talk on the importance of automatic messaging and how to get it right.
He began by pointing out that developers rarely think about monetisation at the start of development, and said that "you need to invert your focus" to make the most of your game.
Urgency and content richeness
Magnuson also said that users expect a personal experience, so your automated messages "should never send them a push notification about something that's happening in the game that they've already been exposed to."
He also went into detail on the different devices and channels that can be accessed to attract attention, for example, "wearables are higher urgency but lower content richness", meaning they will get attention but not provide much information, which may not make them very useful depending on your desired outcome.
