Seed investment and tax relief for video games to the rescue

Barrie Dowsett on how UK developers can get money from the government

At Pocket Gamer Connects London 2016, Barrie Dowsett, CEO of Myriad Associates, gave a talk on how UK developers can secure public funding.

He pointed out that public funding is attractive because "it's not a loan, it is gifted to you" and therefore you don't need to pay any of it back after your game is released.

From tiny acorns...

Dowsett broke down the two main types of funding available to games developers in the UK;

  • R&D grant funding, which act as direct gifts of money to your company, and
  • HMRC incentives, which provide business with tax relief and seed investment directly from the UK government.

He focused more on the latter, offering a "recipe" to receive the most amount of funding, which starts by applying for SEIS a seed investment project, followed by applying for Video Game Tax Relief, which can only be used to recover costs after development is finished.
