Rovio's game sales up again to $161 million, but company makes loss in 2015

Rovio has announced its financials for 2015.

Sales were around $161 million (€142 million), down 12 percent compared to 2014.

However, the company made an operating loss of $15 million (€13 million), due to restructuring, and marketing and other costs for The Angry Birds Movie, which will open in May.

More positively, Rovio's mobile game division (it was ranked #29 on our Top 50 Developers list for 2016) saw sales rise for the sixth consecutive year.

It now accounts for 80 percent of sales, or $130 million.

As has been well understood, the company's recent difficulties have come from an over expansion of its merchandising and licensing activities, all of which has been cut back.

On the up

"As expected, 2015 was a challenging year for Rovio partly due to heavy investments in our future success. However, we have managed to improve our efficiency and turn around the company," said new CEO Kati Levoranta.

"This year's first quarter is already profitable and the outlook for the rest of the year is positive."
