At Pocket Gamer Connects London 2016, Ric Moore, co-founder of The Secret Police, gave a talk on the "hidden winners" of the US App Store in 2015.

A "hidden winner" in this case is a game that grossed particularly well, despite having a comparatively low download rank.

Stealthy

Moore pointed out that, across the top 200 grossing games, there is a fairly large number of genres making appearances, even though the top spots are still dominated by the likes of Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans.

In terms of the games themselves, titles such as Summoners War and Hit It Rich! proved to be big hits in terms of grossing ranks, which Moore suggested was down to having excellent retention rates and monetisation in the games, even though they weren't very visible.
