Sega announces two official Beijing 2008 games for mobile

Sonic set to get own Olympics game (but Mario's nowhere in sight)

Sega announces two official Beijing 2008 games for mobile
Sega Mobile has announced an agreement with International Sports Management (the licensee of the International Olympic Committee) to develop two mobile games, both based on this year's Olympic Games in Bejiing.

The company will firstly be developing Beijing 2008: The Official Mobile Game of the Olympic Games (to give it its full title), which will feature four events in total. The 100m, hammer throw, 200m freestyle and table tennis will be playable, all in two modes – Quick Start and Go for the Gold, which both sound pretty self explanatory.

That's the realistic one, but Sega will also be developing a second game – Sonic at the Olympic Games – which will feature five events (1500m, 400m hurdles, triple jump, discus and javelin), all playable as everyone's favourite fast hedgehog.

As you'll no doubt know, Sonic's already proven his mettle in the sporting arena alongside Mario in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games released on DS (and Wii) earlier this year. Sega will no doubt be looking for a repeat of that game's success, which has topped charts and sold over five million copies worldwide, on mobile.

Following Sega's long standing relationship with mobile publisher Glu – the two have been partners for over two years, with Glu publishing many games based on big Sega brands such as Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and The Golden Compass – we wonder whether Glu will be made responsible for both Olympic games as part of that publishing deal. There have been no announcements yet, but expect to hear more about the games as Olympic fever hots up in the coming months.
