Sensor Tower has predicted that the App Store will be home to more than 5 million active apps by the end of 2020.

This is 73% more than the number of active apps predicted to be on the store by the end of 2016, based on growth trends from the introduction of the App Store.

Rapid growth

There are currently around two million active apps on the store, which Sensor Tower predicts will grow to 2.93 million by the end of the year.

Games are the biggest contributor to the App Store growth, with nearly 21,000 added to the store in May 2016 alone.

PocketGamer.biz's own App Store metrics puts the current total number of active apps on the App Store at 2,631,154.

Of course, with all these apps and games on the store, discoverability will become even more of a problem – especially with Apple introducing paid search ads.
