Clash Royale named best iPhone game of 2016 by Apple

Supercell's Clash Royale has been named as the best iPhone game of 2016 by Apple.

The company revealed its top games of 2016 through the iTunes store across all platforms, including the Apple TV and Apple Watch.

Apple's top ten iPhone games were:

  • Clash Royale - Supercell
  • Reigns - Nerial
  • Inks - State of Play Games
  • FIFA Mobile Football - Electronic Arts
  • Klocki - Rainbow Train
  • Rodeo Stampede: Sky Zoo Safari - Yodo1
  • PKTBALL - Laser Dog Games
  • Snakebird - Noumenon Games
  • Twofold Inc. - Grapefrukt Games

Ports and Pokemon

DrinkBox Studio's Severed, originally a PS Vita game, was the top iPad game of the year. Vector Unit's Riptide GP was given the award of best Apple TV game, while Everywear's Field Day was awarded best Apple Watch game.

Notably missing from the lists is Pokemon GO, arguably the year's biggest game. However, Apple did reveal that it was the most downloaded game of 2016 and the third most downloaded free app overall on iOS.

Supercell had a big 2016 before Pokemon GO stole all the attention. Tencent acquired a majority stake in the developer for $8.6 billion, and it released Clash Royale, a game based on a prototype from several years ago, to massive success.
