FX Networks launches AR-centric game Archer P.I. alongside next season of Archer TV show

FX Networks has launched a new AR game built around the eighth season of its Floyd County-produced TV show Archer called Archer P.I.

The title operates as a parallel story to the show Archer: Dreamland. Players need to use images from the series and associated promotional materials to solve cases in the game.

The design for Archer P.I. also informed certain design choices for TV show. Elements of the show had to be re-designed towards the end of production to accommodate the game.

Starting at the end

"We have to start at a point where the episode is pretty much completely animated," said Floyd County Technical Director Bryan Fordney in an interview with Uproxx.

"We need to find images, that are targets in the show that work well. It's tricky. You take a bunch of inanimate objects, and you're like 'OK, what is the story we can tell here.'"

The game is only playable once a week while the TV show is airing. Archer: Dreamland will run for eight episodes, giving the game a lifespan of two months.

AR games on mobile saw a major boost in interest following the launch of Pokemon GO in 2016. The title was nominated for a BAFTA for Innovation in March 2017.
