RIM to up its revenue cut in updated BlackBerry App World

Credit card billing incoming, $2.99 price barrier broken

RIM to up its revenue cut in updated BlackBerry App World
Always deliver a piece of bad news with something more positive to keep your audience sweet.

That's obviously a mantra RIM subscribes to, with the revelation that the company is set to take a larger share of revenue from app sold on BlackBerry App World balanced out by news that new payment methods are also incoming.

Both updates form part of a wider initiative to expand App World's current set-up to enable it to compete with the App Store and Android Market more effectively.

Money matters

As such, RIM may well feel justified in upping the amount of money it takes from app sales. Currently, the company pools 20 percent of the revenue made from each sale, with developers taking home 80 percent.

However, studios will soon be left with a 70 percent share, RIM upping its hand to 30 percent - a ratio that brings BlackBerry in line with both iOS and Android.

There's a fair chance the addition of both credit card and carrier billing might appease any developers angered by such a move, however, with app sales likely to rise as a result.

Options aplenty

Indeed, the addition of new BlackBerry IDs – which will enable said credit card billing – will also allow users to transfer their collection of apps across from one handset to another when they switch to a new BlackBerry smartphone.

RIM is also lowering the minimum app price down from $2.99 to allow developers to sell $1.99 and 99c apps on the marketplace.

One final addition – all of which come as part of App World version 2.0 - will see apps categorised in new sections, Top 25 Free Apps, Top 25 Paid Apps, Top 25 Themes, Newest Apps and Recently Updated Apps all making the leap.
