Plus GREE FIFA World Class Soccer a big success in Japan

EA claims 10.5% market share on iOS, 'more than double our nearest competitor'
Following on from EA announcing bullish Q3 FY12 financials, the company got into more detail in a conference call with analysts.

Aside from much focus on new online PC/console title Star Wars: The Old Republic, there was some attention paid to EA's strategy in terms of social and mobile free-to-play games.

"We were late to that party but there's an awful lot coming, especially in terms of Playfish and PopCap," said COO Peter Moore.

He went on to talk about the company's success with FIFA on GREE's social mobile platform in Japan.

"FIFA World Class Soccer was an enormous success for a western IP in Japan, where we've previously struggled with FIFA" he said of the #1 ranked game.

"We're pursuing similar strategies around the world."

B of the Bang

Breaking out more detailed figures on iOS, Moore said that during December, EA Mobile claimed a market share of 10.5 percent, which was "more than double our nearest competitor".

It's not clear, however, whether that's in terms of revenue or downloads and across which App Stores: we're guessing US top grosssing.

EA also revealed that at the moment, its revenue - $70 million in Q3 - is evenly split between feature and smartphones, although smartphone sales are growing much faster, up 70 percent year-on-year.
