Planning for a 'less important' PC market

Wooga: Mobile will be bigger than the web in 2013

Jens Begemann, CEO of Berlin-based social studio Wooga, has claimed its work on mobile will be "significantly bigger" than its operations on the web in 2013.

Speaking to Gamasutra almost exactly one year after Wooga made its iOS debut, Begemann explained that back then, the company "only had 10 people working on mobile."

"Now it's over half of the 250-people company."

Bye-bye browsers

Wooga's not the only company to be transitioning from social to mobile gaming, of course, but Begemann reasons are interesting. He predicts that the browser-based gaming is going to be scuppered by the uptake of tablets.

"I think that people who are buying a tablet now, as a private person, won't replace their laptop. They will phase out their existing laptop and they will maybe upgrade in two years to the next generations of tablets. I think that's what's happening."

As such, browser-based gaming is on the way out, and Wooga is preparing for that.

"We have roughly 60 percent of our employees working on mobile, 40 percent on Canvas."

"We still see growth on Canvas and obviously it's still bigger, but the growth on mobile is extremely fast. The PC will become less important, and with that the browser, and with that Canvas."
