I agree, not a business model. But it is a promotion and it gets press on sites like this one and mine.
If a developer drops their price by $1 is that any less effective than paying a PR company $1/user to get someone to download it?

sure - I think the case of dropping the price of a large number of games could be counter productive though, both for the companies concerned in terms of revenue, as well as the wider market.
I guess we'll have to see if any games maintain their chart position when the prices go back up.
