How to smartly localise your game for the global market

As part of Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki 2016, Patrick Yip, Head of Marketing at OneSky, gave a talk on how developers should localise their games for the global market.

Touching on why developers should localise, Yip pointed out that 80% of mobile gamers are outside of Europe, while 71% do not speak English as their first language.

Winning hearts

"You really win their heart with their own language," he said, before pointing to OneSky's work with QuizUp, which saw the game gain 20 million users after translating it into 5 new languages.

Yip then outlined the five steps towards localising your game, including planning, getting your game ready to be translated, the translation itself, a "test-drive", and finally launching the game.
