65 top games for Apple TV: From Beat Sports and Afterpulse to Galaxy on Fire 3 and Guitar Hero Live

The Apple TV has arrived, and with it comes a new avenue for mobile developers to explore with their games, either by developing new games or just adding their already universal app to the OS.

There's already a wealth of apps and games available, but with Apple giving precedence to the top selling games, and games they choose to feature, there's going to be some lost in the crowd.

And that's where this handy list comes into play.

We're looking to track the games that have been released for, or are headed to, Apple TV.

#1: Afterpulse

In its move to appeal more to the western market, Korean outfit Gamevil is publishing thirdperson shooter Afterpulse.

As well as iPhone and iPad, it's coming to Apple TV and so promises triple-A console graphics via 64-bit and the Metal SDK.

There's going to be lots of personalisation - headgear, full body armor, equipment, and grenades or other advanced devices - and, of course, lots of weapons; over 35 primary and secondary.

Modes included Training, Free-for-all and 8-player team Versus.

Air Wings sees you engaging in dogfights with paper airplanes in online multiplayer. There's 18 different planes to choose from, ranging from the classic paper plane to a plane constructed from balsa wood and rubber bands.

There's a variety of classroom-themed weapons to fend off opponents with, including spit wads, rubber bands, and heat-seeking pencils, and there's 22 different battlefields for you to prove your might on.

A side-scrolling platformer, Almost Impossible! has you guiding a small ball of light through a maze of platforms and spikes, trying desperately to stay alive.

There's 50 tricky levels to work through, each one harder than the next, a thumping electronic soundtrack, minimalist graphics, and leaderboards to show off your highscores and prove that it wasn't so impossible after all.

Alto's Adventure sees you snowboarding down a mountain trying to catch up with your escaped llamas, pulling off flips and grinds as you go to build up points and speed.

You also need to avoid rocks, chasms, and your elders for as long as possible, all the while collecting coins to spend on items and upgrades.

Gameloft has always had a reputation as an early adopter on new hardware and it's no difference with Apple TV.

As yet, all we know if that its prime racing franchise Asphalt 8 will be available, although there's no news on what (if any) exclusive content will be added to the version.

If nothing else though, it will be interesting to see if the mobile game's Twitch integration makes the port.

#6: BADLAND

After being ported to just about every other console, puzzle-platformer BADLAND is also making its way to Apple TV. It sees you guiding a black blob through challenging levels, with one-touch play that has you tapping the screen to fly up to dodge obstacles.

The Apple TV version loses the level editor, but the Level World is still available, and you can still make levels on your other iOS devices for use on the TV. You can also import your saves over from the iCloud to pick up where you left off.

Beach Buggy Racing has you rallying around beaches in over-sized karts, firing weapons at your opponents in a bid to be the first across the line.

There's fifteen tracks to race on across six different game modes, 25 power-ups including fireballs and oil slicks to throw off fellow racers, and a host of racers and karts to choose from and race with, each with their own special abilities.

One of the games to be formally announced during the Apple press conference, Harmonix's new Beat Sports is positioned as an Apple TV-exclusive version of Wii Sports.

Of course, this being a Harmonix game, the underlying gameplay is music based with the control method all revolving around moving around the Apple TV remote.

There will also be a colourful space monster theme: at least that was the case in the music/baseball mash-up shown on stage, which had the player hitting back projectiles thrown by various boss characters.

#9: Beneath The Lighthouse

Beneath The Lighthouse sees you rolling a ball-like character around perilous underground levels after it falls down a well, having chased a seagull that stole a hat.

You rotate the world to get the ball rolling, with quick reactions required to avoid flying straight into walls of spikes, and try to get to the end in the fastest time possible.

In Bugdom 2, you play as Skip McFly, a young grasshopper who sets off on an adventure to explore the world in and around his home. There's ponds to swim in, baseballs to run on, and all kinds of regular household items to see from a new perspective.

There's also a variety of other creatures to encounter, from friendly mice to spear-throwing roaches, as you go about your travels.

#11: Calvino Noir

Set in 1930's Europe, Calvino Noir is a stealth point-and-click adventure that sees you taking three different characters through a series of heists, complete with all the trappings of the noir genre.

That includes a jazz soundtrack, a dark story, and hardboiled dialogue to set the tone of the world. You can tackle each of the game's seven levels as you see fit, either charging it with brute force or sneaking around and avoiding trouble.

There's eight different game modes to play in, with single and multiplayer options available, or you can just see how far you can get before you meet your untimely but inevitable demise.

As demoed on stage at the Apple TV event, indie smash Crossy Road is coming to Apple TV with an exclusive two-player multiplayer mode.

This means you can play head-to-head blocking the other player's progress or knocking them into the path of oncoming traffic.

One player will the Apple TV remote, with the other using any supported MFI gamepad or an iPhone.

Set in a dark void where only a snooker table exists, Cueist allows you to play either pool or snooker with a floating snooker cue.

You can play alone and battle it out against an AI floating snooker cue, or play against a friend. You can use the Apple TV remote or an MFi controller, and it looks quite nice too.

#15: Disney Infinity 3.0

The third installment of Disney's sandbox IP franchise is already out for consoles but looks likely to be leading its mobile campaign via an Apple TV release.

The game is focused on Star Wars, with footage of X-Wing combat around the Death Star shown on stage at the Apple TV event. Other gameplay elements include thirdperson lightsaber and blaster action.

Of course, Star Wars isn't the only Disney property to feature with Marvel and Inside Out also providing environments and characters.

As with Activision's Skylander series, Disney Infinity 3.0 has a physical toy element, although it's not clear now extensively this will integrate in with the mobile and Apple TV version of the game.

#16: Does not Commute

Set in a small town in the 1970's, Does not Commute has you directing traffic to the right destinations, with more cars added in increments, following the paths you have already determined for them.

The chaos is broken up with short pieces of text that tell a bizarre story, and there's additional boosts to help you out for when things get too tricky.

Taking a break from the traditional Doodle Jump formula, Doodle Jump Race sees the small jumper strapping on a jetpack and flying across the screen, dodging obstacles and trying to make it to the finish line first.

You can post your fastest times to leaderboards to show off your skills, or battle it out with friends in multiplayer.

#18: Dungeon Quest

Released back in 2012, Dungeon Quest is an entirely free-to-play action RPG that sees you battling through randomised dungeons, defeating monsters and grabbing loot to make your characters even stronger.

There's no content walls, energy system, or in-game adverts either - the IAPs are purely vanity items and optional purchases, with no pressure to buy them.

Current players will be able to transfer their saves over to the Apple TV, which will also receive the new 2.0 update that adds in a PvP Battle Arena mode.

There's 28 levels to bomb through, a level editor to create your own once you've finished, and hundreds of community-made levels already available to blast through as quickly as possible to hit the top of the speedrun leaderboards.

There's 27 jumps to make across nine different locations, with 11 different bikes to tackle them on. You'll be navigating loops, flaming hoops, springboards, and other obstacles before tackling the bigger stunts, such as a 13 double-decker bus jump.

Fibbage is a game in which 2-8 players have to invent convincing lies in response to bizarre prompts given on screen.

Using your phone or tablet as a controller, you have to trick your opponents into thinking your answer is true to earn points, while avoiding giving other players points for their lies, and trying to work out which answer on the screen might actually be correct.

Based on the Vita remake, Futuridium EP Deluxe has you flying a spaceship through colourful levels, shooting orbs and nodes in order to keep your energy levels up to avoid an early game over.

The levels are larger and harder than its iOS counterpart, and players who can handle the tough difficulty will be rewarded with medals and high ranks to show off their skills.

German developer Deep Silver Fishlabs is taking its space combat franchise Galaxy on Fire into F2P with the third installment.

Called Galaxy on Fire 3 - Manticore, it will also be backed with a prequel. Called Galaxy on Fire - Manticore Rising it's an Apple TV exclusive that will grant additional insights into the game world.

#25: Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved

Activision's arcade shooter has been out on mobile for four months, but given its genesis as an Xbox 360 game, the option to play this electronic neon-lit bullet-hell-shooter on a big screen with a gamepad is likely to be one that many early adopters will be keen to experience.

And, no doubt, as happened with iOS devices, the Apple TV version of the game will get exclusive levels, as well as the over 100 levels and 12 battle modes which with it was originally launched.

French developer Eden Games has a strong history of racing games - V-Rally, Test Drive Unlimited - and GT Spirit will continue its sim racing status.

Everything from engines to aerodynamics are said to be fully simulated, and when tinkering under the hood in the performance shop tiny details - even down to the interiors - can be viewed in full HD.

The game has been made in Unity, and has been in development for 20 months.

Rebooting the rhythm action franchise, the console versions of Guitar Hero Live are in development at UK developer FreeStyle.

It's not clear how much crossover there will be between the console Apple TV and mobile (iOS) versions but we know the mobile/Apple TV game will be supported with a new Bluetooth six-button controller.

A dungeon-crawling, first-person hack-'n'-slash adventure, Heavy Blade has you slicing up foes with a sword to the sweet sound of a hard rock soundtrack.

There's thirty dungeons to crawl through, with plenty of loot to grab as you go. You can also find secret passages and rooms by listening for whispers, and the game features support for a range of controllers.

There's two modes to play in, with Arcade mode providing standard high-speed action, and Fugitive mode throwing police and roadblocks into the mix to make it harder. The Apple TV edition also improves the graphics for a crisper experience.

There's also marine biologists and a crazed sushi chef to avoid as you make your way through the story, which involves a trip to the aquarium with your wife and kids.

Labelled as a mix of action and exploration, your goal in the game is to seek out and collect all the Incrediballs - little characters who you can feed, play and make music with.

Weird, but it seems Rayman now has his own set of Pokemons, although more directly, the Incrediballs also act as power-ups during your quests.

For that reason, around 50% of the game will involve some form of driving ground, water and flying vehicles.

Combined with these racing elements is item collection so players can upgrade their vehicles; something that will also be supported through the in-game currency, Gearbits.

More generally, the game will feature 20 new characters, each of which will be matched with one of the 20 available vehicles.

And, of course, there will be a special physical toy bundle for iOS and Apple TV.
