Best monthly gain since November 2009

The feeling that iOS and Android are set for an almighty tussle is motivated by a series of US-based stats that, month by month, suggest Google's OS is making serious inroads.

Indeed, on the back of recent claims that Android is now the top seller in the States, web analytics company Quantcast has published figures that suggest its share of web traffic is seeing an upturn as a result.

The latest numbers for August state that Android handsets now account for 25 percent of all mobile web consumption up 2 percent from last month, and almost 19 percent since the start of the year.

While this still places the OS some distance behind iOS Quantcast putting Apple's platform on 56 percent the firm's numbers suggest it's the current leader suffering the most thanks to Android's assault.

Quantcast's yearly figures have iOS's share down 11 percent since the start of the year, with RIM holding comparatively strong, down less than 2 percent.

However, given the overall growth of smartphones in general, it's likely web usage on all platforms is up across the board, with Android's growth simply stronger than that of its rivals.
