The MOBA opportunity for mobile

League of Legends dominates game usage in Chinese PC cafes

The Chinese games market is in flux, but the shift isn't just about PC to mobile.

Tastes are changing too as described in the latest survey on PC cafe game usage trends from Chinese platform outfit Shunwang.

It reports that during Q1 2014, the majority of time spent in PC cafes - 52 percent - was playing MOBA games.

Of course, Riot Games' League of Legends  - as operated by Tencent in China - is by far the most popular title, with over 40 million users.

Significantly, though, MOBA is a genre that despite plenty of attempts, hasn't yet been successful on touchscreen devices, either in China or the west.

Levelling down

After MOBA, first-person shooters are the second most popular genre (22 percent), with Korean-developed CrossFire the most popular FPS. Again, in China, it's operated by Tencent.

MOBA wins

As for that once staple of the Chinese scene, MMORPGs is small (8 percent) and on the decline.

Most games in this genre saw player numbers down by more than 10 percent quarter-on-quarter, including Blizzard's World of Warcraft.

Bad news for MMORPG makers
