Chinese casual F2P publisher FunPlus raises $74 million for global expansion

When you have a big vision, you need deep pockets.

That's the thinking behind China-headquartered casual F2P publisher FunPlus' $74 million Series B venture capital round.

Orchid Asia Group led the investment with GSR Ventures, and Steamboat Ventures also involved.

Funplus previously raised $13 million in 2012.

Primed for growth

Founded in 2010, to-date the 200-strong company has done the majority of its business on Facebook, thanks to games such as Family Farm, which has 4 million daily active players, and Royal Story.

Its only mobile release - for iOS, Android and Amazon - has been Family Farm Seaside.

It says the cash will be used to back at least two to three games launches in 2014, particularly on mobile, as well as building its development teams in San Francisco, Vancouver and Beijing.

"We are pleased that Orchid Asia Group, GSR Ventures and others have recognized our success and are coming on board at this time to accelerate our growth to the next level," said Funplus CEO Andy Zhong.

"This new round of funding will help us expand more quickly into new markets and to recruit and hire the best game development talent in the world."
