Star Trek actor George Takei boldly goes into mobile gaming

Star Trek actor George Takei has joined Hong Kong studio Fifth Journey as its Creative Director.

Founded in March 2015 by former Universal Pictures, Gameloft and LucasArts employees, the company works with film studios to find developers and publishers to work on movie-based mobile games and virtual reality content.

Fifth Journey has previously signed partnerships with Universal Pictures, Lionsgate and MGM, which also took an equity stake in the studio.

Big screen to small screen

The company has worked on games such as The Expendables and Kubo: A Samurai Quest. The latter title is based on an animated film called Kubo and the Two Strings in which Takei voices one of the leading characters.

Takei’s role at Fifth Journey will include suggesting new storylines for the Kubo: A Samurai Quest.

“They [Fifth Journey] offered me this opportunity to participate in this new medium, and as they say in Star Trek, I’m going boldly where no one has gone before,” Takei told the South China Morning Post.

“This is a new medium for me, just like social media was. I was a pioneer in Facebook and once I got into it, I loved it and explored all the possibilities, for entertainment and informing my followers about social justice issues.”
