Website editor, BlockchainGamer.biz
Journalist / Editor / Writer - Editorial / Writing - United Kingdom
|Job Title||Website editor, BlockchainGamer.biz|
We are looking for somebody to develop and grow our site dedicated to the growing blockchain gaming scene. If you're an editor and writer who's interested in getting inside this burgeoning industry and communicating how NFTs are going to change the gaming world, this could be for you.
BlockchainGamer.biz is a b2b portal dedicated to demystifying, exploring and explaining the blockchain games space. Launched in 2018, it’s an editorial site aimed at those working in – or interested in finding out more about – the disruptive and burgeoning blockchain space and its intersection with the games industry.
The site is updated daily with news, features, interviews, deal news, profiles and other timely and regular editorial pieces that support and inform the games industry on matters of blockchain development and investment.
Its mission is to be an essential resource for people working in the blockchain games scene at every level, from curious students to the CEOs of ad networks and everybody in between. The team constantly asks itself what utility it provides the industry, and what it can do to report on and connect the blockchain games ecosystem.
This is a full-time, work-from-home, editorial team leader position at Steel Media Ltd. Please note this is a website editorial role and not a video editing role. It's suitable for those with a written journalism background and not video editors. The job can be performed from home and so a London/Bath location is not essential, we will consider candidates from anywhere.
The purpose of this role is to manage, edit, commission and produce content for the blockchain gaming editorial brand at Steel Media. As well as the daily content of BlockchainGamer.biz, the role may involve overseeing and contributing to brand extensions like awards and conferences like BeyondGames.live. It is a varied and creative role that demands the successful candidate be a manager and an ambassador as well as a content creator. The site is still growing, and is dedicated to an exciting space in the games/entertainment world, so this is a great chance to be joining – you’ll shape not only this new brand, but also how the industry views blockchain, NFTs and player-owned economies.
The editor is a role that will be directly responsible for producing and commissioning daily content – such as news, interviews and features – for BlockchainGamer.biz, and also taking a holistic interest in the strategy and perception of the site, and in all of Steel Media’s b2b output. You’ll be required to work with the writers, managers and other team members to devise and implement the content strategy for the .biz site, and support associated activities. Primarily, you will write content, and also run the small team that maintains and grows the site's traffic and community. You'll be responsible for its status in the tech, blockchain and games industry. You’ll organise yourself and your freelancers so that daily and weekly content targets are hit.
You’ll be responsible for planning and executing additional content (for instance, Top 50 Blockchain Games Companies specials) as needed, site regulars and other brand extensions. As a figurehead for the website you will take a prominent role in events like the Pocket Gamer Connects and Beyond Games conferences and be prepared to be on stage (or in front of camera) as a spokesperson for the company and the industry. You’ll also work closely with the rest of the editorial and sales teams to share ads opportunities.
The BlockchainGamer.biz site editor role sits under the b2b side of Steel Media's business, alongside the editors of BeyondGames.biz, TheVirtualReport.biz, PocketGamer.biz and PCGamesInsider.biz, reporting directly to the senior management team. This role also contributes to our events, Pocket Gamer Connects and Beyond Games conferences and other related live activities. You will expected to maintain communication with all teams – including our b2c editorial branch etc – to ensure joined-up thinking and support across the company.
This is a fascinating time to be joining as this person will help shape the activities of the company in how we cover the hottest tech topics going forward. There will be a small team of freelancers to manage, and developing the team to get the best out of them is a key part of the role, as is working with other parts of the company to assure an efficient approach to editorial, events, sales, marketing.
You will work remotely, usually from your own home, and therefore a London or Bath location is not essential. But it is valuable that you have easy access to transport centres such as an airport, because when the world unlocks again you will be invited to represent Steel Media Ltd at relevant events. During a typical year, travel to and from events is important, and you will ideally have a valid passport. During such times, it may be necessary to work or travel outside of standard working hours.
Summary of responsibilities
The role would naturally evolve with market trends and any changes in the company, and as an editorial manager you will need to be flexible, but the initial focus would be items like this:
• The site’s expert content will need to be planned and created to hit daily targets. You will write some of it yourself, and deploy the site’s other freelance contributors to create the rest. You will plan, direct, manage, edit and promote the site’s editorial output with their help, to a level defined by the senior managers.
The ideal candidate
We’re looking for an experienced website editor – ideally at least one year of experience of running and commissioning a website, and three years of working in editorial in total – who can demonstrate that they are a safe pair of hands to lead this site into its next chapter.
It’s important that you are curious about blockchain, smart contracts and NFTs, and are interested in their potential in the games space. You do not need to be a heavy crypto investor (indeed, journalistic objectivity might suggest that’s a bad idea) and you don’t need to be an unquestioning enthusiast for every NFT project (again, you’ll need to apply journalistic scrutiny) but you do need to care about this nascent scene, believe in its future, and take the time to parse the scene and champion it. We are not necessarily looking for a ready-made blockchain expert, but we do hope you’re prepared to become one, and that you are prepared to demystify and celebrate the technology and investment going on in this area.
The editor needs to be organised, dependable, personable and have a level head, especially when on deadline. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated personality who enjoys getting under the skin of the industry, and getting the most out of their team. It's an ideal role for someone looking to further their career in the media, games and tech industries and who fundamentally understands the differences between the key players across all sides of the industry – from developers to publishers, advertising networks, influencers, middle-ware, upcoming technologies and so on.
You’ll have a keen interest in games, tech, science, business and new technologies and be hungry to find out more about blockchain, particularly about how the industry works. You'll be a great writer and editor, able to convey complicated ideas in a clear and lively fashion. You’ll have an editorial background in journalism (ideally with b2b experience), and are hungry for more responsibility or to take on a new, interesting site. You’ll need a good eye for what sort of editorial is of most utility to a growing industry. You'll be a great writer, and you’ll need to be an expert at managing deadlines, priorities and other people.
Plus you’ll benefit from a positive, entrepreneurial attitude. You’ll be a gamer; an early adopter; you’ll enjoy getting the best out of people; you’ll be good at spotting creative and commercial opportunities wherever they arise. You will be interested in the brand, the team, and the company, and be capable of putting their needs first.
Steel Media is a small company where the teams work on a number of projects simultaneously; decisions are made quickly, and no two days are the same. So you’ll need to be good at working independently when needed, and respond to the wider needs of the senior managers as they arise. You need to manage multiple communications channels daily, via email, Skype, Zoom and Google Docs and not be fazed by this. Due to working remotely, you will need to be comfortable being out of an office setting (it doesn't suit everyone) and be able to communicate and report to your line-manager via Skype and other online systems regularly.
• At least 3 years’ editorial experience (games/tech/b2b industry), at least one of them as a site editor.
