Superheroes to help Kabam break market

Kabam to launch China assault with Marvel: Contest of Champions

Following its success in the west, Kabam is launching action-fighter Marvel: Contest of Champions in China.

Since its release last year, the well-regarded game has been downloaded over 30 million times and has been #7 in the US iPhone top grossing chart, as well as being a top 10 top grossing game in 90 countries.

While Kabam have yet to agree which Chinese publishing partner will distribute the game, CEO Kevin Chou told Hong Kong’s Mobile Games Forum that they are currently in negotiations with potential companies.

Super punch out

Despite having the bulk of its development teams based in China, Kabam previously focused its growth outside of the country, although following a $120 million investment from Alibaba in 2014, it's prioritised China as its key growth market in 2015.

Certainly it will be interesting to see whether despite its nascent distribution muscle in China, Alibaba gets a slice of the action, or whether Kabam sticks with Android app market leaders such as Tencent, Qihoo 360 and Baidu.
