Angry Birds and Warcraft movies enjoy strong start

The Angry Birds Movie hits $238 million worldwide, with China in the lead

The Angry Birds Movie has hit $238 million in worldwide box office revenues since its May 20 release.

In the international market, China has been far and away the biggest source of revenue, with the movie raking in over $55 million at the Chinese box office.

It's also interesting to note that, while very different to Rovio's casual bird-flinging franchise, the movie adaptation of Blizzard's Warcraft series has also been proving successful in cinemas.

Warcraft enjoyed opening weekend revenues of $32 million - generally considered to be a success - but it's not on track to overtake The Angry Birds Movie, which made $38.2 million in its opening weekend.

On this evidence, it would take a brave individual to bet against more major mobile gaming franchises making their big-screen debuts sooner or later.
