Nintendo launches Switch Online companion app for voice chat and organising online matches

Nintendo has launched its companion app for the Nintendo Switch which allows access to various online features including voice chat.

The Nintendo Switch Online app is currently free to use by all who download it, though it has limited functionality for anyone who doesn't own a Switch. When Nintendo's online services receive a full launch in 2018, a paid subscription will be required to access the app.

Chat me up

Currently, the app features a hub for upcoming game Splatoon 2, which allows players to check out various stats from play sessions. More hubs will likely be added as more games are released.

The app also allows players to invite their friends into games, either using Facebook, Twitter, or their Nintendo Switch profiles. It is also required for anyone wishing to use voice chat.

Nintendo is slowly rolling out its online service with a full launch planned in 2018. It is expected to cost $20 a year, and will include a monthly offering of free retro games to own forever.
