Retaining Japanese voice cast to give it that authentic anime feel

Onmyoji finally gearing up for a Western release with beta in US and Canada

NetEase Games' hugely popular mobile RPG Onmyoji is finally gearing up for a Western release with a beta in the US and Canada.

Interested players can sign up for a place on the limited beta through the official Onmyoji Facebook page. The full game is expected to launch in the West sometime in 2017.

In terms of localisation efforts, it appears that the game will be retaining its Japanese voice cast for the Western version, and will presumably be a text-only translation. The game is being pitched as "anime-style", so this seems to be a deliberate choice to target the anime market.

Go big or go home

Onmyoji is perhaps NetEase's biggest game to date, having achieved over 200 million downloads since it first launched. It was also ranked as one of Apple's top ten iPhone games in 2016.

A fully localised version of the game launched in South Korea in August 2017. It became a top ten grossing game in the country in a matter of days.

Onmyoji remains one of the top grossing games in China, alongside a raft of other NetEase titles. It helped the company reach $2 billion in revenues in its latest financials.
