Individual games more likely to skew one way or the other

Nintendo Switch is played docked about as often as undocked

Nintendo say the play time for docked and undocked play on Switch is “about even".

Speaking to Ars Technica, Nintendo senior VP for sales and marketing Doug Bowser said that time spent in either mode is “about even - about 50 per cent in the dock and 50 per cent away from the dock."

Various games can skew the percentage individually, of course. Just Dance is played more in dock, while Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild see more even distribution. But overall, the data skews around 50-50.

This isn’t a complete picture of the data, only gathered from games played while connected to the internet. But Bowser added that being able to track the gameplay mode is an invaluable tool for understanding its own market.

"One of the nice things we've seen with the Switch is we're able to read more telemetry data in how players are engaging with the content," said Bowser.

"We get that when they connect, if they have a Nintendo account we have the ability to understand how they're engaging with the device.

“From a positioning standpoint, we can look at various titles and how they're being played. That allows us to think about various ways with digital marketing and some of our videos to know how to position them."
