Rovio Star's Plunder Pirates discovers buried treasure in France, China and South Korea

Since Rovio announced it would publish thirdparty games under its Rovio Stars banner, the industry has wondered if the firm would be able to find itself a new Angry Birds.

Obviously, unearthing a title with the potential of Rovio's own hit franchise is an impossible task, but if the mobile giant can find a game with even a fraction of that potential, it'll be on to a winner.

That's why, in this week's Charticle, we decided to take a look at one of Rovio's newest recruits, Plunder Pirates.

Developed by UK studio Midoki, Rovio clearly believes there's barrels of promise in the pirate themed world-builder, but will the mobile gamers of the world feel the same way?

Let's haul anchor and find out.

Pieces of Eight?

In the US, Plunder Pirates has been performing well enough, even if it hasn't exactly been setting the charts alight.

The game has spent the majority of its time drifting inside the top 150, breaking into the top #100 sporadically, and peaking at #69 and #48 on iPhone and iPad respectively.

French glory

It's a similar tale on the European top grossing charts, in which we look at the performances in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK.

Plunder Pirates has been a constant presence inside the top #150 on both iPhone and iPad, however, the game has struggled to find any consistency higher up the charts.

In Europe, Plunder Pirates has struggled for consistency on the main top grossing charts for iPhone (above) and iPad (below)

The one exception to that rule is Plunder Pirates' performance in France, with the game finding a solid foothold inside the top #100.

On iPhone it peaked at #30 on iPhone, while on iPad it peaked 22.

Asian treasure

Another surprise is how well Plunder Pirates has done in Asia, notably China and South Korea.

On iPhone, is been top 50 on the top grossing charts, doing best in South Korea.

And things are even better on the top grossing chart for iPad, with Plunder Pirates carving out a place in the top 50, peaking at #8 South Korea and #12 inChina.
