Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake and Xac USA: Pop Culture Trivia the #1 critically acclaimed games for June 2014

If you were wondering what the best-reviewed iOS and 'droid games on the web last month were, here are the iPhone Quality Index,  iPad Quality Index,  and Android Quality Index  round-ups for June to fill you in.

The iPhone, iPad, and Android Quality Indexes  boast over 650,000 reviews (in total) from websites like 148Apps, Pocket Gamer,  and IGN,  and use a unique metric to create a single definitive score for each iOS and Android title.

Mean monsters

At number one on the June iPhone Qi  game chart, Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake  is a thoroughly charming casual puzzler that evokes the spirit of Nintendo's Zelda  games. High praise indeed.

VVVVVV,  at number three, couldn't be more different - aside from the stiff difficulty level, that is. Terry Cavanagh's superb platform-adventure sees you flipping gravity on its head in a bid to negotiate a fiendish free-roaming space station.

The third part of Shenandoah's masterful Crisis in Command  series sits at number two on this month's iPad Qi leaderboard. Desert Fox: The Battle of El Alamein  offers the same hardcore brand of WWII strategy as its predecessors, but this time transplanted to the dusty battlefields of North Africa.

At number ten, Dragon Quest VIII  offers a sprawling JRPG world rich with detail and incident. It's a console conversion, but a particularly thoughtful one, with an iPhone-friendly portrait view and one-handed controls.

Down at number six on the Android Qi leaderboard,  meanwhile, Tales of the Adventure Company  mixes the current obsession with roguelikes with a game of Battleship.  Or, to use a more modern example, a game of Disco Zoo.

Charging from the back of the chart, meanwhile, is Gameloft's Rival Knights.  This gorgeous casual brawler has you riding into jousts as a gallant knight, employing timing and IAPs to emerge victorious.

N.B. While we only display the average score to one decimal place, the lists are generated to further significant figures. We just don't show them all.

And, naturally, these are static graphs based on live listings which are subject to constant change as new releases and reviews emerge.

In order to provide a regular marker of the critical zeitgeist, however, we will continue to round up the best of the iOS and Android games released each month to provide the definitive Quality Index top tens.
