The Journey Down: Chapter Two and Five Nights at Freddy's head Qi's top rated iOS and Android games for September

If you were wondering what the best-reviewed iOS and Android games during September were, here are the iPhone Quality Index, iPad Quality Index, and Android Quality Index round-ups to fill you in.

The iPhone, iPad, and Android Quality Indexes boast over 650,000 reviews (in total) from websites like 148Apps, Pocket Gamer, and IGN, and use a unique metric to create a single definitive score for each iOS and Android title.

Down but not out

It's pretty easy to see why The Journey Down: Chapter Two topped the Qi iPhone games chart for September. It's another slice of funny, clever, and thoroughly engrossing point and click adventuring that somehow maintains the high standard of the first chapter.

Meanwhile, down at number four we have Valiant Hearts: The Great War, another excellent point and click adventure. The key to Ubisoft's effort is its moving, stylised take on World War I. You won't have played anything quite like it.

Continuing the good work, at number two on the Qi iPad games chart we have Mikey Boots. BeaverTap's third Mikey game scraps the platforming element of Mikey Pants and Mikey Hooks in favour of a rocket-propelled arcade time trial extravaganza.

Finishing off a very classy September is CounterSpy, down at number five. This is Sony's impossibly slick and cool stealth-'em-up, which is equal parts The Incredibles, James Bond, and Metal Gear Solid.

Five Nights at Freddy's rules the Qi Android games chart for September with fear. It manages to create a genuinely terrifying atmosphere as your hapless security guard flees from a band of animatronic killers. Eek!

At number three, Appointment With F.E.A.R. is an entertainingly gaudy comic book story played out with an extra dose of interactivity. Create your own hero and set out on your choose-your-own-adventure path.

Just behind at number four, ALONE... manages to breath new life into the tired old endless runner. It does so with stylish stripped-back visuals, a unique space-spelunking setting, and a delightful inverted control system.

N.B. While we only display the average score to one decimal place, the lists are generated to further significant figures. We just don't show them all.

And, naturally, these are static graphs based on live listings which are subject to constant change as new releases and reviews emerge.

In order to provide a regular marker of the critical zeitgeist, however, we will continue to round up the best of the iOS and Android games released each month to provide the definitive Quality Index top tens.
