Like more OpenGL ES 2.0, not the fragmentation

Freeverse, Gamevil, Firemint, Illusion Labs and Axios talk up iPod touch '3GS' graphical goodness
Following Apple's announcement of a third generation iPod touch - or the 'iPod touch 3GS' as we like to call it, we asked noted iPhone developers their thoughts on its significance.

What will be the impact of having more devices that run the graphically advanced OpenGL ES 2.0 technology?

What about the older devices that don't support it?

And are they disappointed about the lack of a camera?

Ian Lynch Smith, president of Freeverse (Flick Fishing, Top Gun, Grunts) says:

"As long as there is a $99 iPhone 3G, we will continue to make games that run great on the hardware. We are excited for what the future brings with faster and faster devices. It would be great if every device had a camera, but Apple makes it easy to support devices with and without cameras."

Rob Murray, CEO of Firemint (Flight Control, Real Racing) says;

"I am really excited about the next iPod touch. It will increase the install base of fast Open GL ES 2.0 iDevices and it won't be long before these powerful devices constitute a worthwhile market in themselves. We can expect this to raise the bar of gaming on the iPod and iPhone once again.

"I am not disappointed by the lack of a camera because we don't really use it for the games we are planning. I would rather Apple focus on keeping the unit price down for iPod touch than add a camera and potentially lose sales for the extra cost. I really love the way Apple are focusing in on games for this device!"

Kyu Lee, general manager of Gamevil USA (Zenonia, Hybrid Eternal Whisper) points out:

"The biggest thing that I wanted to mention is not the new devices, but the price drop on the existing models. Now with the lowest priced iPod touch at $189.99, it is now only a $20 difference from the Nintendo DSi."

"Apple continues to prove that it is serious about gaming, not only with it's Open GL ES and Bluetooth support for iPod touch, but also with it's comparison with the Nintendo DS and PSP they did in today's event."

Josh Rosen, Axios Games (SciFly, Above & Beyond Air Combat) says;

"I'm glad that it has the hardware support for OpenGL ES 2.0, however the general media doesn't know that means. They should have said "All the powerful hardware from the 3GS!" That combined with no camera, I suspect will lead to very low sales, and little noticeable growth in ES 2.0 user base."

Anders Mårtensson of Illusion Labs (Touch Grind, Sway) says;

"The good: OpenGL ES 2.0 in iPods means more people can enjoy OpenGL ES 2.0 goodness. The bad: Not all models get it. This encourages us to do OpenGL ES 2.0 games. Lack of camera is no big deal to us."
