Critical acclaim

Infinity Blade II, Seal Force, and Grand Theft Auto 3 are the top-reviewed iPhone games of Q4 2011
Seeking inspiration from public game companies' announcements of financial sales numbers every three months, Qualityindex.com has decided to publish its own quarterly figures.

But, instead of assaulting your ears and eyes with talk of operating profit, the Quality Index quarterly round-up ranks the top 20 best-reviewed iPhone games that were released during the period October 1st - December 31st, 2011.

Simple as that.

As for the reviews themselves, Qualityindex.com boasts over 110,000 of them from the world's leading online sources, including 148Apps, Slide to Play, Pocket Gamer, and AppSpy.

No end to the praise

The highest-rated iPhone game this quarter was Chair's Infinity Blade II, the studio's spellbinding sequel to its boundary-pushing hack 'n' slash epic.

Through this much-anticipated follow-up to Infinity Blade, Chair brought an unprecedented level of polish to App Store gaming, delivering production values that wouldn't seem out of place in a full-price home console title.

Featuring the same swipe-to-slice combat method as its predecessor, Infinity Blade II offers a wider variety of fighting styles for you to experiment with than its prequel, bigger enemies to tackle, and a whole new castle to explore.

Awarded no fewer than six perfect 10 scores from across the iPhone universe, Infinity Blade II battled its way to a mighty 9.3 Qi rating to end the fourth fiscal quarter on top of the pile.

Mobile joyride

iPhone critics also seemed to rather enjoy Grand Theft Auto 3's blend of satire and criminal carnage given that this remake of the PS2 open-world classic stormed into bronze medal position on Qi's quarterly leaderboard.

The porting across to iPhone of Rockstar's celebrated tale of mob violence and vehicular slaughter was undoubtedly an impressive technical achievement, while the gameplay itself holds up even ten years after its original release.

At this rate, we can all presumably look forward to playing Grand Theft Auto 4 on our mobiles sometime around 2018.

So good they named him twice

The Adventures of Tintin: the Secret of the Unicorn, meanwhile, finished in fifth place on our Q4 rundown, and since it's a movie tie-in, it's fair to say that everyone was a bit shocked by the game's quality.

But, bucking the video game industry's trend for producing shoddy licensed spin-offs, Gameloft's intrepretation of the young Belgian reporter's escapades managed to secure perfect scores from both Slide to Play and Gamezebo.

In these publications' reviews, The Adventures of Tintin: the Secret of the Unicorn was praised for its luscious visuals, excellent storytelling, and gameplay variety.

So, dear readers, join us again in April to see if any of the next quarter's selection of iPhone gaming goodies can match Infinity Blade II's impressive Qi score.

iPhone Quality Index's Top 20 games of Q4 2011

Methodology #1

To qualify for a Quality Index rating, a game must have received three or more reviews from the 60+ sites that feed into Qi's database.Methodology #2

In the event of a 'tie', titles are separated in the first instance by number of reviews - the higher the total, the better.

Should the number of reviews also be identical, the Quality Index rating comes back into play, for while we only display the average score to one decimal place, the list is generated to further significant figures.

You can always keep up to date with the hottest-reviewed iPhone games at the Quality Index.
