As the year draws to an end, it's time to look back at what happened in the world of mobile gaming during 2009.
Equally, the lessons of history are useless without a future to demonstration what we've learnt, so as well as asking various notables about their view on the past 12 months, we're also getting them to look ahead to 2010.
You can see the full list of our end of year interviews here.
In a year dominated by the rise of social gaming, SGN (Social Gaming Network), unsurprisingly had a successful 2009.
In January it was claiming 8 million downloads of its free and paid games, and by July this was up to 13 million.
Standout titles included paid air combat game F.A.S.T., which sold over a million before being turned into a free app with optional paid content. SGN released its first dedicated freemium game, Skies of Glory, in December.
Randy Breen is the company's chief operating officer.
Pocket Gamer: What was the most significant event of 2009?
Randy Breen: The ability to use in-app purchases on the iPhone
What was the most significant event for SGN?
Our first free game with in-app purchases Skies of Glory going live.
What was your favourite mobile game of 2009?
Skies of Glory - an eight-person multiplayer air combat game over cell phone connection.
What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2010?
The freemium business model. We are going to see more free-to-play games with paid content.
This is great for social games, because it's going to mean more emphasis on engagement and keeping the players coming back to the game. Players will be able to jump into games with no risk, and game developers are going to have to work hard to make games that keep them playing and wanting new content. I think that's a win-win for everybody.
If you could enforce one New Year's resolution, what would it be?
Stop copy cat designs and get people to make something original.
Thanks to Randy for his time.
You can keep up-to-date with SGN via web and Twitter.
