King.com's Alex Dale on filling the firm's London studio with 'friendly, fun' staff
Having spread its base to open up a London studio back in May, social giant King.com has now set about populating it with staff – taking to the PocketGamer.biz jobs board to do so.

The firm currently has a total of four positions up for grabs at the studio, leading with a new business manager – a position that, according to CMO Alex Dale, won't simply be handed out to the applicant with the most experience.

Rather, King.com if after someone that can also fully integrate with the rest of the team.

We caught up with Dale to find out just why filling the firm's studio in the British capital with fun and friendliness is so important.

Pocket Gamer: What brought about the new London studio?

Alex Dale: King.com has become a world leader in casual social gaming and is focused on improving and increasing our portfolio of fun and engaging games.

The new London studio let s us take advantage of some of the great game development talent in the UK, and along with the new Barcelona studio and the recent purchase of Fabrication Games we have significantly increased our game development capacity across mobile and social platforms.

What advantages will operating from the UK give you?

King.com has offices in London, San Francisco, Malta, Hamburg and Milan and our development centers are in London, Barcelona, Stockholm, Malmo, Bydgoszcz and Bucharest.

The advantages of having a development studio in London are huge and the opportunity to benefit from the vast pool of both home grown and foreign talent that the city attracts is a tremendous prospect.

London is a great place to hire development talent from across Europe, and it is quite e xciting to be part of the increasingly vibrant London tech scene.

Will the London studio work on mobile properties at all?

Yes, the London studio will work on social and mobile properties. We are staffing up for four game teams at the moment, who will work on multiple platforms.

How is King.com's smartphone assault going?

Mobile is key for King.com looking to the future. We have recently launched our hit game Bubble Witch Saga for all iOS devices – iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

It is the first Facebook game to fully sync to mobile and tablet devices, keeping player’s leader boards, scores, progress and virtual goods constant across both platforms.

The game is expected to be launched on Android later this year. We opened a studio in Romania earlier in the year to produce mobile versions of our top Facebook games and we are confident that they will perform well.

We also acquired the award-winning mobile developer Fabrication Games in Sweden in March, gaining that company’s game IP, technology and team.

What are you looking for in your UK studio's business manager?

The business manager is a critical role in the leadership of the game team. They own the strategy for a title and make sure we are maximising opportunities for monetisation, virality and other core KPIs.

He or she works closely with the product manager for the game to prioritise the roadmap according to expected ROI, and with the marketing team to identify additional sources of revenue.

It is an extremely strategic and collaborative role, with an emphasis on sharing knowledge and insights with senior leadership and with peers across the organisation.

We are looking for someone who is extremely analytical with experience using statistics and data to make decisions, who has worked with online products - games preferred but not required, although they must like to play them - who understands the evolving business models of games as a service and, perhaps most importantly, is friendly, super smart, fun, and someone we want to work with.

An MBA and a background in strategy, management consulting, or business leadership is a big plus.

As an aside, what's your take on Apple's iPhone 5 unveiling?

The iPhone 5 launch looks like it has been a great success and, from a King.com perspective, reinforces our plans to build on the success of Bubble Witch Saga mobile by developing and launching future titles on the iOS platform.
Thanks to Alex for his time.
