We had 2 successes in 2012 but we also killed 4 games

2012 in review: Greg Harper, Supercell
As we consider the trends of the past 12 months and look forward to the next 12 months, we've asked the great and the good in the mobile gaming industry for their opinions.

Greg Harper is Supercell's GM for North America.

Pocket Gamer: What do you think was the most significant event for the mobile games industry in 2012?

Greg Harper: Although we haven't really seen the full impact of it yet, Apple's introduction of the iPad Mini was definitely one of the most significant events of 2012.

What was the most significant event for Supercell?

It was really a great year for us. We were so fortunate. Launching our first two games for tablet earlier this summer was definitely the most significant event at Supercell.

Another major highlight for us was when Clash of Clans and Hay Day cozied up next to each other at the #1 and #2 spots on the top grossing charts. And, the final fun surprise was when Hay Day knocked Clash off and claimed the top spot for a day.

And, while we've enjoyed our share of success with those two titles, we also killed four games during the year as well. For us as company, those were very significant events because we learned so much going through that process.

What was your favourite mobile game of the year?

I hate to pick one of our own games, but I would be lying if I didn't say Clash of Clans.

What do you predict will be the most important trends in 2013?

I'm not really going out on limb, but here are a few stabs:

  • Tablets dominate. Explosive growth for the iPad Mini, the tablet market and gaming on tablets.

  • More games on tablets targeting core gamers.

  • Overall quality takes a major leap forward.

  • Lots of announcements and activity around games on TV in 2013 - new video game console launches, Apple TV, Ouya, Valve's Big Picture and probably more.

What's your New Year's resolution and what resolution would you suggest for the industry?

I generally avoid resolutions, except I am resolved to jump through a hole in the ice in Finland at some point this year. If not this winter, then maybe later this summer with ice cubes and a cocktail.

For the industry, I hope she resolves to keep growing at an even faster pace. And, then, don't mess with it.
