Tencent's director if investments and biz dev in the West departs

Tencent’s Western director of investments and business development Jonathan Lai has left the Chinese publishing giant.

Lai has been with the firm since 2015 and he and his team were tasked with investing in companies in the US and Europe.

Busy bees

Tencent’s investments in the games industry are plentiful and include Pocket Gems, Discord, Glu Mobile, Supercell and Epic Games, to name a few.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Lai has now joined global investment management outfit Coatue Management. He’s been tasked with investing in digital entertainment across mediums including games, video and music.

The firm has invested in numerous companies including Activision Blizzard, Netflix and Spotify.

Tencent’s M&A activity isn’t expected to stop in light of the news. Indeed, the company may continue looking outside of China to expand its portfolio given the new incoming regulations for the local games sector. The country however remains by far its most lucrative market.
