Distimo: Prices of popular iPhone apps fell 15% over past 3 months
Analytics firm Distimo has released yet more statistics from its February report.

The firm concludes that the most popular iPhone apps on the App Store have an average higher price in Europe than anywhere else on the globe.

With games the most popular solo category in all continents, Distimo's statistics suggests the average price of the most popular paid apps in Europe has hit $3.86 – a figure that puts it easily ahead of North America on $2.43 and Australia $2.86.

"Although this may reflect that less expensive applications are more popular in North America... this may also be caused by the fixed price tiers that Apple uses for converting application prices to other currencies than USD," Distimo points out.

Falling app prices

However, the average price of paid applications has dropped worldwide, Europe's average figure having previously been at around the $4.50 mark back in December last year.

Overall, the prices of the most popular applications have decreased 15 percent on average during the period, December 1, 2009 through February 28, 2010.

"The largest relative price decrease occurred in Asia where prices dropped 27 percent from $3.77 to $2.74. Prices of the most popular applications in Asia decreased 10 percent, dropping to $2.78 on average," the report concludes.

Australia appears to be the region with the biggest appetite for games, Distimo claiming 51 percent of all apps sold on the App Store fall into the gaming category. The equates to North America on 39 percent and Europe coming in at around 33 percent.

A matter of taste

Distimo's statistics also show the stark differences between the apps purchased in the west and those picked up in the emerging world.

While popular games like Doodle Jump, Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies and Pocket God feature in one, if not all, of the top ten highest ranked paid applications in Europe, North America, Australia and Asia, the countdowns in Africa and South America are dominated by messenger and video clients, as well as more established franchises such as Pac-Man and Crash Bandicoot.
