How G5 has converted 4 million iOS downloads into a million dollar business
The evolution of mobile app stores has enabled developers to experiment with their business.

And so enticing is the prospect that Russian/Swedish firm G5 Entertainment – previously a developer that focused on games based on movie licenses for the likes of EA, THQ, Konami and Sony – began the process of moving into publishing in 2009.

Now, CEO Vlad Suglobov used a presentation to investors - the company is floated on the Stockholm exchange - to detail the firm's experiences both publishing its own titles, and its decision to focus on the casual games market.

Marking up the millions

To date, G5 has notched up 4 million downloads on iOS, with iPhone dominating the firm's handheld releases. 2.5 million of these downloads were made in 2010, with numbers reaching a daily peak of 31,000 downloads on March 14.

Almost 10 percent of those downloads were for full paid games, which an average price of $3.

But it's G5's model of development that enables it to maximise the revenue generated by each release, according to Suglobov.

Mobile might

Almost all of the publisher's new titles debut on PC, before moving on to mobile formats, assuming the game in question is a success.

It's here that the company is able to reap the rewards, with 66 percent of all its revenue in O1 2010 generated on iDevices.



Mobile formats appear to be G5's focus in the future, too, with the firm suggesting releases on Android and BlackBerry will soon follow.

Developments on social networks such as Facebook and MySpace are also a target – Suglobov noting the social networking element of casual development is becoming increasingly important.

Winning in the west

The prevalence of iOS in G5's operations is also highlighted by the fact that the majority of the firm's revenue is generated by sales in the west.

According to Suglobov, the breakdown of G5's iPhone business – where 44 percent of all revenue is generated in North America and 35 percent in Europe and the UK – is reflected across its entire library.



That's a situation G5 appears entirely happy with, with Suglobov claiming the publisher will launch 30 games across all formats this year – up from 12 games last year.

As a result, G5 is targeting revenue of 17 million kr (around £1.46 million) across the year and an operating result of 6 million kr – around £517,000.
