Mobile is offensive move say execs

Search on Android is up 300% in six months, Android Market now 70k apps strong
Google has announced its Q2 2010 earnings.

Revenue was up 24 percent year-on-year to $6.82 billion. Net income was also up 24 percent to $1.84 billion.

The company has cash, cash equivalents, and short-term marketable securities of $30.1 billion compared to $26.5 billion at March 31, 2010.

Calling Android

More interesting in terms of its mobile activities however was the news mobile search has grown 500 percent during the past two years.

Search on Android devices is growing even faster; up 300 percent in the first six months of 2010.

The Android Market is picking up momentum too with around 70,000 apps now available, up from 30,000 in April.

Gunning for growth

Google executives were also asked if Android was a defensive strategy and once that wasn't as well supported as it might be, presumably questions in relation to the likes of Apple and Microsoft, and the nature of the Android Market as a paid for app store.

"We did it for offensive reasons, not defensive reasons. We think an open ecosystem is incredibly important. And we know that smartphones create a new set of activities for search and transaction," came back one response.

"This is in its nascent stage. I don't think of this as defensive at all," said another.
