Pocket Gems' iOS freemium games are generating more than $2 million a month

Financing fuelled growth

Pocket Gems' iOS freemium games are generating more than $2 million a month
Following on from a $5 million strong funding round at the end of 2010, social mobile developer Pocket Gems has revealed it has enjoyed its first month of multi million dollar sales.

The firm's freemium line up generates revenue from the sale of virtual goods, with Pocket Gems hinting that 2.5 million new installs across the course of the cash injection have helped to push such transactions beyond the $2 million mark.

Expanding entertainment

In total, downloads of the studio's games now number almost 18 million, with Tap Zoo consistently ranking as one of the highest grossing apps on iOS since its launch in September 2010.

"We have big plans for 2011 as we pursue our mission to drive the evolution of mobile entertainment," said CEO and co-founder Daniel Terry.

"By expanding our engineering and art teams, we will be able to accelerate our time to market while continuing to develop titles that are more engaging for customers and raise the bar on production values."

Such expansion has come in the form of appointments at its San Francisco office, with PocketGems claiming it expects to hire more than 40 engineers, artists and product managers by the end of 2011.
[This story, which originally claimed Pocket Gems had generated more than $1 million across the course of December, has been edited following a clarification from the publisher that revenue was actually in excess of $2 million.]
