Tap Zoo developer Pocket Gems has surpassed 40 million downloads on the App Store, clocking up 40 weeks within Apple's top grossing chart in the process.

According to the firm's figures, Tap Zoo alone has spent 28 consecutive weeks within the top five grossing app chart, having launched 44 weeks ago.

Pocket Gems' most recent release, Tap Pet Hotel, has also held a place in the top five grossing chart every week since it launched 12 weeks ago.

"We are extremely proud of what we've achieved in just under two years," said CEO Daniel Terry.

"We've got a great team, and now that we’ve been able increase our pool of talented people we’re even more excited about what we have in the pipeline to deliver in the coming year."

As a result of its success, Pocket Gems has hired 40 people this year, taking its employee total past 50.

The firm has also recently moved to a new HQ in San Francisco, pitched as a means to achieving its additional goal of doubling the size of the company before the end of 2011.
