The smell of Cologne
GDC Europe will be held in Cologne, Germany, and runs from 13-15 August, alongside the well-established gamescom trade fair.
The organisers promise sessions covering the waterfront of game development, with three recently announced speakers at the special Social & Online Games summit likely to appeal to PocketGamer.biz readers.
- In 'Games Design is Business Design', Ethan Levy (formerly of BioWare Social) will discuss how the rise of the free to play market has transformed the role of the modern game designer.
- Another session on free to play design will see Andrew Sheppard, president of Kabam (The Godfather: Five Families, Kingdoms of Camelot) discuss how developers can appeal to core players on mobile and social platforms.
- James Phillips, co-founder of the data-management company Couchbase, will use Draw Something as a worked example in his casebook study on how to build and launch a large-scale social game.
A Smartphone & Tablet Games Summit has been announced for 14 August, but there's no news of any confirmed speakers yet.
