Hoplite and Joe Danger Infinity are heading the Quality Index's Top 10 rated iOS and Android games of January 2014

If you were wondering what the best-reviewed iOS and 'droid games on the web last month were, here are the iPhone Quality Index, iPad Quality Index, and Android Quality Indexround-ups for January to fill you in.

The iPhone, iPad, and Android Quality Indexes boast over 650,000 reviews (in total) from websites like 148Apps, Pocket Gamer, and IGN, and use a unique metric to create a single definitive score for each iOS and Android title.

Hop to it

2014 has started with a BANG for mobile gamers.

Topping an extremely strong January iPhone Qi (and iPad Qi) game chart is Douglas Cowley's Hoplite, a deceptively nuanced roguelike strategy game with a stripped-back art style.

Then, we have Crescent Moon Games's impossibly slick action-platformer Shadow Blade, at #5.

There are few games with such a capacity to make you feel like a badass ninja. This is one of them.

Hello Games will feel unlucky not to have topped this month's iPad Qi chart with Joe Danger Infinity, in truth, having produced one of the most generously proportioned - not to mention gorgeous - iPad games ever made.

Of course, that very same description could be applied to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which is a truly console-standard arcade racer.

We DID tell you it was a strong month.

'Stripped-back' isn't a phrase that you'd readily associate with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, however. So, we won't.

Rockstar's sprawling open-world masterpiece finally surfaced on Android in January, securing the #3 spot on our monthly leaderboard in the process.

Down in fifth spot, though, LYNE is one of those classy puzzlers that’s as easy on the eye as it is taxing on the brain.

If there's a prettier way to match shapes, we haven't seen it.

Finally, Crescent Moon Games adds a clever progression system and a Minecraft aesthetic to the familiar Trials HD format in Blocky Roads.

N.B. While we only display the average score to one decimal place, the lists are generated to further significant figures. We just don't show them all.

And, naturally, these are static graphs based on live listings which are subject to constant change as new releases and reviews emerge.

In order to provide a regular marker of the critical zeitgeist, however, we will continue to round up the best of the iOS and Android games released each month to provide the definitive Quality Index top tens.
