Rovio's Icebreaker and Gameloft's Asphalt 8 run away with the Pocket Gamer Awards

Nintendo also makes its mark

Rovio's Icebreaker and Gameloft's Asphalt 8 run away with the Pocket Gamer Awards

We learned a lot at GDC this past year, but even we were surprised by the trio of trifectas that dominated the 2014 Pocket Gamer Awards.

Sponsored by Kamcord and Chukong Technologies, the winners of the Pocket Gamer Awards walked away with a bottle of bubbly, a posh crystal trophy to add to their brag cabinets.

More importantly, of course, they were also boosted by the satisfaction of knowing that Pocket Gamer readers chose them as the best in their respective categories.

The winners

The competition was stiff and the tension high as the lists of nominees were read off just ahead of our annual GDC party at Roe in San Francisco, but by the end of the night it was clear who our readers thought the big winners were.

Asphalt 8: Airborne, Gameloft

Gameloft's Asphalt 8: Airborne picked up a triad of awards for Best Sports/Driving Game, Android Game of the Year, and Windows Phone Game of the Year.

Amazingly, however, Asphalt wasn't the only title to pick up three awards across the course of the night.

Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage, the first game published under the Rovio Stars banner, picked up awards for Best Casual/Puzzle Game, iOS Game of the Year, and Overall Game of the Year.

Not to be outdone, however, Nintendo asserted its position by racking up an impressive three awards of its own - Best Adventure/RPG (Fire Emblem: Awakening), 3DS Game of the Year (The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds), and Best Publisher.

Telltale Games had a bit more understated showing than it did last year, but still managed to walk away with the prestigious Best Developer award - and all without breaking our stage.
